On the pitfalls of the precalibrated gaze. Reproductions of anthologies on the art of the “Orientalists” dating from the turn of the 19th to 20st century are again reproduced in parts, enlarged, some of them rasterized, and reassembled in b/w photo-copies.

On my Mother´s Side
Triptych – My grandparents on my mother’s side originally came from Upper Silesia (today Poland). Their children where born between 1941 and 1959. Today all of them own their own house which is very important for them and their self-image.

In 1994 I moved to Weißensee, a former Eastern part of town. Turkish classmates, business- or doner stand owners had been familiar faces all the years before. But at this time there were no Turkish people in Weißensee at all.

With our concept Ziemniak | Kartoffel (potato) we want to remember the benedictional impact of potatoes in both of the neighboring countries and at the same time start a new tradition which might overcome speechlessness between Polish and German people.

Starting point is the cultural context of Germany. Winnetou, the fictional character, created by the German writer Karl May in the late 19th century, as the object of projections. With these projections in my luggage I traveled to New Mexico.

Stereoscopy is an outdated medium for picturing far away places of yearning. In New Mexico your are being overwhelmed by the landscape and the vastness of the skies. Actually it seems totally impossible that Karl May has never been here.

Finding Winnetou
During the first phase of my research on the phenomenon Winnetou I read the novels and biographies of Karl May. I also looked into the interpretation of the Winnetou-Store in Schilderns’ audio plays, movies and on (open-air) stages throughout Germany.

At home he turns on his big TV for me and puts in “Geronimo” on DVD. The longer the film goes on, the more uncomfortable I feel. Ray’s great-grandfather was Geronimo’s half brother and was with him until the end.

Based on Lewis Caroll’s “Game of Logic” this work consists of three blackboards. Declinations of various relations with German history are written on them. Being a foreigner in the US made me think about German past’s effect on the present.
