Ernestine

Found footage of my grandfather’s estate. Series of 52 digitised slides, which Reinhold took of his wife, my grandmother Ernestine between 1970 and 1985. A staging of fundamental forlornness, which has been a substantial aspect of their attitude to life.

Part III – Neutral Zone | photo

Email by Dr. Ley, Memorial Site of Konzentrationslager Sachsenhausen, May 2006: Dear Ms Ammon, (…) I can well imagine that it must be quite difficult to learn that a member of one’s own family was a concentration camp guard.

Witkiewicz

In 1986 I went to Poland for the first time. While trying to invest the inevitable compulsory exchange in somewhat meaningful, I discoverd the photo book “Przeciw Nicości” (Against Nothingness) with works of the impressive polish artist Witkiewicz in Kraków.

Part II – Second Travel

I learned that my uncle has disappeared from Vilnius since July 2000. At that time he met two German tourists. He decided to ride back to Germany with them in their vehicle. He has never shown up anywhere until today.

Part II – First Travel

In January 2005 I travelled to locations in Poland and Lithuania where my family had lived before and during WWII. I located places from photographies, talked to contemporary witnesses and historians and searched archives in Ostrołęka, Łodz, Kaunas und Gelgaudiškis.

Stereo Landscapes

Stereoscopy is an outdated medium for picturing far away places of yearning. In New Mexico your are being overwhelmed by the landscape and the vastness of the skies. Actually it seems totally impossible that Karl May has never been here.

Finding Winnetou

During the first phase of my research on the phenomenon Winnetou I read the novels and biographies of Karl May. I also looked into the interpretation of the Winnetou-Store in Schilderns’ audio plays, movies and on (open-air) stages throughout Germany.

Narcissus

Narcissus was attracted to a pool by Nemesis, where he saw his own reflection in the water and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus drowned..

Winnetou found

Below are some of the things I stumbled upon during the nearly three years I spent investigating this topic (also part of our shows in the USA WILDWEST, in order to illustrate the extent of Germany’s fascination with the “Indianer”).

Part I – The Moose on the Ice

In my family projections play an important role. My father’s and my mother’s side stranded in West-Germany. I grew up surrounded by dialects, stories and places that didn’t appear elsewhere. I am looking into these present projections onto the past.

Am I here?

Photografit series of self-portraits which mark the end of my pictoral self-ascertainment using the image of myself. 135 images were created which explore mimics, surface and physicality. I assembled them in chart-like arrangements that show the sequences of the images.

I wish I was … I am

“I wish was… I am…” and “I want to know what art is” deal with my projections on the image of the artist. Questioning the construction of the realm, the category of art and asking about the representation of artists

Part I – Diorama

I shot these self- and moose portraits in Berlin’s Museum of Natural History. The diorama with moose depicts a typical river-mouth landscape, like the Nemunas in Lithuania, where my grandparents went on vacation in the 1920s when they were young.
